Two-bay Oak Frame Garage, Chelwood Gate

Client brief

To help our client design and build a two-car oak frame garage with a room above for a teenagers’ den and guest accommodation when needed.

About this project

This client had a really clear vision of what they wanted to achieve so it was a very collaborative process in bringing their vision to life.

The initial design and planning were handled by an architect then we progressed the project from this point. We provided the structural calculations and ensured the design was realistic to the client’s budget.

One of the most involved elements of the brief was the placement of the oil tank. The client wanted this hidden out of sight at the back of the garage. Putting an oil tank next to a timber-framed structure is a non-standard approach and required us to increase fire-proofing measures to ensure the housing for the tank met the appropriate fire rating. This was achieved and it was a great testament to the team to be able to solve the challenges and deliver on the client’s requests.

The design

Using the original footprint, the structure replaced the previous garage and had a raft foundation. This is more complex than an average garage foundation but suitable for this type of construction.

For the upstairs space, we assisted the client in designing and creating a light-filled room with a separate bathroom. We also worked with the client to design the exposed balcony with views over woodland.

Exposed balconies are trickier to achieve with oak framing but we’re so pleased with the outcome, it is a stunning outside space with no compromise on appearance outside or in.
With the floor-to-ceiling glazing, the view is framed beautifully from the inside too and can be enjoyed year-round.

This two-bay garage with the multi-purpose room above is a stylish and practical addition to the family home and we’re so pleased with how the project came together.
