Barn Restoration, Nr Uckfield

Client brief

We were entrusted with restoring this beautiful timber barn that had become rotten and dilapidated, and to save as much of the original materials and style as possible.

About this project

This was a complicated restoration due to the rotten timbers and overall poor condition of the barn. The structural load bearing elements had failed completely so the barn had to be stripped back to its shell before further damage could be assessed and before any restoration could begin.

Each component was stripped out, labelled and once the dismantling phase had finished, each component was then assessed on whether it could be salvaged or not. Fortunately there were original features and structures that could be restored and re-used in the project but the roof had deteriorated too far. The old tiles were carefully removed and the new pitched roof was done with oak. The oak roof complements the style of the barn and will age beautifully.

Restoring dilapidated and old buildings is always a complex process and often many of the original features are too far gone to be salvaged but we save and reuse what we can. We were fortunate that some original structural features were salvageable and new elements were only added where needed.

The design

As with any restoration of an old building in poor condition, the actual extent of the restoration required is not always visible through site inspections and early analysis. Sometimes, it is not until you’re well inside the project, that you discover further issues that need addressing.

When we dismantled the barn back to its original shell, we discovered that no foundations had been dug to the rear and the building was only sitting on single sandstone blocks. The lack of foundations accounted for the movement in the barn and obviously something that need resolving before any building works could begin.

This was a really lovely Sussex barn to restore. We love building traditionally styled oak framing, it is built to last and stunning to look at. It was a great project to complete with our team and timber specialists.

Whilst discovering a lack of foundations or any number of secrets your old outbuildings are hiding can be daunting, we’re experienced at taking these potential outcomes into account.

We’ll guide you on the best approach and how best to plan your budget for such a project. If you have a beautiful old barn in need of sympathetic restoration, contact us at enquiries@imperialframing.co.uk or call on 01825 740 482.
