How we work

Site visit

We’ll come to you to discuss your brief and budget. We’ll listen to your vision and offer ideas, creative solutions to potential challenges and outline what we can deliver for you.

Design phase

Spending time at this point is critical to ensure the needs of the brief and budget are met.
We can design in-house or work alongside your architect to take your final design through to planning and sign off.

We will project manage and deliver the entire construction phase through to the Building Control sign off. We are hands-on, on-site and will be in continual communication with you on the status of the build as it progresses and completes.

Imperial Framing & Construction began as a specialist joinery business, renowned for beautiful oak and timber framing construction.

We design and build bespoke and exceptionally crafted oak framed structures for commercial and residential projects including conservatories, orangeries, timber garages, stables and home offices. We have also built entire timber-framed homes and commercial spaces.

We have a passion for the skill and processes involved with oak and timber framing but have diversified the business to utilise more of our extensive experience to offer a broader range of construction services.

Construction Services

Working across residential, commercial and agricultural projects provides us with a diverse network of suppliers and specialists that our clients benefit from.

Whether you are planning a restoration, renovation, conversion or new build, we have the experience and expertise to ensure your project runs smoothly, to schedule and to budget.

We’re an established team with over 35 years of experience between us delivering high-quality and complex construction projects. The business is headed up by Lewis and Harriet Gibbs, supported by Chris Martin, our Contract & Project Manager.

Lewis Gibbs, Imperial Framing

Lewis Gibbs

I’m not sure I can remember a time when I wasn’t involved in construction. I followed my dad around on-site until I was big enough to get stuck in, and then, as soon as I could, I started my own business. I’ve now been running and developing Imperial Framing & Construction for nearly 20 years.

It is great for me to look back and see how the business has evolved to become this highly regarded construction business which can turn its hand to anything. Carpentry and oak framing are still my passion, and I am never happier on-site than when building with oak and working on specialist joinery projects.

When I’m not on site, I like to keep busy, which is fortunate because I have an active young family and play football for Hartfield. Busy with the business and busy with the family, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Chris Martin

Contract & Project Manager

I started working with Lewis and Harriet in 2012 but have over fifteen years of experience in the industry. For the first ten or so years I focussed on carpentry and general building works before going on to specialise in contract and project management for the last five-plus years.

As Contract and Project Manager for Imperial Framing, I work alongside Lewis to manage the multi-faceted nature of our larger and more complex builds. The business has an incredible network of specialist trades alongside architects, planning consultants, surveyors and engineers, and it is my role to bring these elements together on time and on budget. It’s a hugely rewarding role, and great to be part of such a hands-on and skilful team.

Outside of work, I like to keep busy. You’ll most likely find me on the golf course, on a climbing wall or paddle boarding. When it comes to unwinding, I’m into yoga, cooking and reading.

Do I need planning permission?2023-07-17T12:11:56+01:00

Understanding which construction projects require planning consent and which fall under permitted development can be confusing. The good news is we’ve done a whole blog post about this very thing! Read our post on Navigating planning permission and permitted development.

What is the difference between an Orangery and a Conservatory?2023-07-17T12:14:39+01:00

Orangeries are characterised as having more brickwork than glazing. This will give you more privacy, and the room will feel more like an extension to your home than an addition.

Conservatories are characterised as having more glazing than brickwork. You’ll benefit from wall and ceiling glazing to allow optimum light and connection to the outdoors.

Do you charge a fee for an initial consultation?2023-07-20T11:09:46+01:00

No, we’re very happy to have an initial discussion and review of your project free of charge.

If you want a more in-depth consultation following the initial discussion, this may incur a fee, but this would be discussed and agreed upon at the outset.

Don’t just take our word for it; read our latest testimonials from satisfied clients.

Lewis recently constructed a beautiful oak porch for us in Nutley. He couldn’t have been more helpful accommodating my requests and the finished result far exceeded my expectations. Overall a very straightforward company to deal with, reasonably priced and beautiful results. Highly recommend.
